Our Illusion

Julian Beever in Singapore

Take a look at an artist’s masterpiece, degraded by the conditions stipulated by the sponsors who bought the floor space. But we cannot really blame the artist — Julian Beever — for he is just an innocent victim. World renown phone makers Nokia brought him here, so they get their name etched onto illusion’s slide-up ‘building phones.’

I wonder if Mr. Beever had his hands tied over the theme of his illusion. Here it’s clear the idea is cellphones have been structurally integrated into our society. Good message, but was it at a price?

Regardless, it’s still a great work of art and testament to Mr. Beever’s creative genius. If only Singaporean artists were allowed this kind of creative freedom! I’ve said it for years: time to inject some soul into this nation, otherwise Singapore will become even less than what it is on the map.
